Sample collection plays a large role in characterizing a site, be it for an environmental site assessment or to support excess soil management. Sample results are the foundation of these investigations, and ultimately dictate what needs to happen next on a project. Errors in sample collection can impact results, delay projects, and increase costs.   1. Proper Planning Matters
    Sampling isn’t always  just “grab and go.” We design sampling plans that meet project and regulatory standards and account for site-specific conditions. This reduces the risk of data gaps in the data set or the need to re-sample, saving time and money. 
  2. Field Accuracy is Key
    Even the smallest mistake in the field (mixing up samples, improper labeling, or cross-contamination) can skew results. Our field team is well trained and follows strict sampling procedures developed with industry best practices to ensure each sample represents the true site conditions. 
  3. Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC)
    Quality management starts at the sampling planning stage, with understanding project objectives. An appropriate number of QA/QC samples need to be collected in the field, which sometimes requires specialty orders from the labs. Clear, legible labels, as well as appropriate sample bottles/jars are necessary to ensure the laboratory can analyze the samples as per outlined analytical procedures. We also make a point to review sample Chain of Custodies (COCs) before sample submission to ensure no issues with the lab receipt and clear instructions to the lab on the requested sample analysis. We work closely with accredited labs to verify results, detect anomalies, and maintain high standards of data integrity.
  4. Implications on Results
    Our experience in this industry helps us to look at results critically – are the results expected based on the Site history, or is this unexpected? If the latter, what could be causing the unexpected result? We make a point of maintaining ongoing education on new science and sampling procedures to try and avoid unexpected results from field interference (like sediment in groundwater samples resulting in false exceedances) or understand where and why elevated concentrations may be present (naturally occurring contaminants in certain geographic areas). We use this ongoing development and engagement in our industry to improve our operations and provide our clients with the best results possible.
